For the Rotterdam Rooftop Days, “Rotterdam Rooftop Walk”, a temporary walkway by studio MVRDV, opened on May 26. The installation, an orange ribbon that draws a new pedestrian crossing, connects a number of the city’s buildings, runs along Rotterdam’s World Trade Centre and creates a connection to the Bijenkorf department store.

The scaffolding contractor Dutch Steiger built the 600-meter-long “Rotterdam Rooftop Walk”. The structure accommodates the geometric and topographical textures of the different rooftops by drawing a new urban geography. The event aims to offer visitors and residents a new vision by walking and participating in the different initiatives taking place on Rotterdam’s rooftops.
The installation runs through one of the city’s best-known areas, Coolsingel, and leads visitors to the rooftop of the Bijenkorf department store, where there are installations and exhibitions by artists, architects and designers.

“Rotterdam Rooftop Walk” stands in continuity with “Stairs to Kriterion”, a temporary installation created in 2016 also by studio MVRDV for the celebration of the 75 years of the reconstruction of Rotterdam which attracted almost 370,000 visitors.
The new walkway will be open to the public from May 26 to June 24 2022.
