“The Beauty of Impermanence: An Architecture of Adaptability” is the title of the 2023 Sharjah Triennial of Architecture, announced by Triennial President Hoor Al Qasimi and curator Tosin Oshinowo. The theme addresses the deep issues of the “Global South” where scarcity –understood in both material and immaterial terms – becomes a cogent and pressing issue for architectural, urban and social culture. The “culture of reuse, reappropriation, innovation, collaboration and adaptation” underlie the theoretical and practical reflection proposed by the Triennial curator. Issues that guide strategies that are more resilient and equitable, but above all, capable of adapting to the practices and conditions of the South.

For some time, many architects, designers, and artisans have understood how looking at local traditions can be the starting point for imagining more sustainable development. This way of working carefully dwells on the concept of impermanence, from urban to design culture, proposing more innovative visions for the future.

Tosin Oshinowo, curator for the second edition, brought together a curatorial advisory board of international architects, artists, and designers to define an inclusive yet specific approach for the next edition opening in November 2023.
