BAPS HINDU MANDIR TEMPLE

From The Middle East

TRADITION AND LIGHT MERGE IN SACRED ARCHITECTURE

Studio Lumen and Linea Light Group illuminate the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first traditional stone mandir in the Middle East and the largest Hindu temple in Western Asia

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi was inspired by the vision of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (one of the world’s leading Hindu religious organizations), and brought to life thanks to the dedication of over 2,000 Indian artisans and more than 200 international volunteers, who meticulously hand-carved over 25,000 blocks of pink sandstone and Italian marble.

A TEMPLE UNIQUE IN EVERY DETAIL

Inaugurated on February 14, 2024, and designed according to the ancient principles of the shilpa shastras (Indian treatises that define the rules and principles of architecture, sculpture, and sacred art), the BAPS Hindu Mandir combines tradition with modern engineering precision. It is the first traditional Hindu mandir to incorporate full digital modeling and seismic simulations into its construction, ensuring structural stability and resilience. The temple is 33 meters high, 80 meters long, and 55 meters wide, featuring two domes (ghumats) and seven spires (shikars) symbolizing the seven Emirates. Its 402 unique pillars and hundreds of carved details narrate stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavatam (key texts of Hindu culture conveying moral, philosophical, and religious teachings), interwoven with narratives from Arab, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Native American civilizations, creating a visual heritage of universal significance. Beyond the central structure, the complex houses prayer halls, themed gardens, educational areas, and a visitor center, offering an immersive experience that blends spirituality and culture. Open to people of all faiths, the BAPS Hindu Mandir is not only a place of worship but also a tangible symbol of interfaith harmony and cultural dialogue – a bridge between India and the United Arab Emirates – and a testament to the collaboration, tolerance, and shared creativity that made this unprecedented project possible.

THE LIGHTING PROJECT: A RESPECTFUL APPROACH

To highlight the volumes, decorative patterns, and rich materiality, Studio Lumen developed a lighting design that respects the temple’s identity while enhancing its visual presence during evening hours, selecting Linea Light Group for the development of custom solutions. The Italian company proved to be the ideal partner for an intervention involving the discreet integration of systems designed to emphasize the depth of the pillar carvings, the monumentality of the spires, and the chromatic richness of the materials, without altering the atmosphere of contemplation and spirituality that defines the mandir.

LIGHTING DESIGNED TO INTEGRATE WITH MATERIALS

The main challenge was selecting fixtures capable of enhancing the beauty of the materials and the depth of the sculptures without compromising the sacred atmosphere. For this reason, Linea Light Group developed fully customized solutions, combining high-performance lighting with minimal visual impact – for both the indoor and outdoor areas of the temple.

OUTDOOR

The Shaker projectors, thanks to their custom finish, blend harmoniously with the color and texture of the stone, allowing light to enhance surfaces and details without perceptual interference, ensuring a discreet, non-intrusive integration. The custom Orma_AJ recessed floor lights, equipped with Tunable White technology, allow extremely precise control of light output and color temperature, highlighting the three-dimensionality of the pillars and the depth of the carvings without glare. The Orma_A architectural recessed fixtures, also with Tunable White technology, ensure visual uniformity and continuity along pathways and ornamental surfaces, accompanying the space delicately and contributing to a coherent atmosphere respectful of the sacred context.

INDOOR

Inside, the lighting design was meticulously crafted to ensure continuity and respect for the sacred context. Orma_A recessed fixtures with neutral 4000K color temperature illuminate the spaces unobtrusively, enhancing materials and surfaces while maintaining architectural language continuity. Adjustable Optus_Ex fixtures, also at 4000K, provide targeted accents, guiding attention to architectural details and significant moments of the journey without disrupting the overall harmony of the space.

LIGHT AS A NARRATIVE ELEMENT

The lighting enhances the temple without ever overwhelming it. Light follows the rhythm of the carvings, caresses surfaces, and reveals the depth of the sculptures, creating a nighttime image faithful to the material purity of the building.

Thanks to Tunable White management and highly precise optical control, the project allows modulation of lighting atmospheres according to different ritual moments and space requirements. Light becomes a dynamic, sensitive element, accompanying the spiritual experience without ever interrupting it.

In this balance between technology and respect, between the visible and invisible, light transforms into a narrative language: not only revealing the architecture but interpreting its deeper meaning, guiding visitors on a journey of contemplation, connection, and discovery.

Through this project, Linea Light Group confirms its ability to combine advanced technology, respect for cultural heritage, and narrative lighting – even in spaces of profound spiritual value.
